Published 1860. The accounts of British merchant John Scarth who resided in China for 12 years. The book includes two chapters devoted to his travel in 1856 through Swatow and Teochew when region was in virtual anarchy. He was also witness to dramatic events leading to the end of a Triad occupation of Shanghai, an event Teochews in the city featured prominently.
