Published 1879. The Swatow Opium Guild, as the Westerners knew the 19th century Chaoyang-Huizhou Association (潮惠會館) in Shanghai, was at the centre of legal case filed in 1879 by two opium merchants, Messrs. T.W. Duff and D.M. David, accused of conspiring to monopolise the opium trade in Chinkiang (Zhenjiang), a city on the Yangtze River. This book records many intriguing revelations of the high profile suit that pitted a group of Teochew traders (backed secretly by local officials) against more powerful foreign competitors.
