The Chinese junk was the primary transport for Teochew traders and migrant coolies travelling between China and Southeast Asia, but there is little first hand account of what goes on onboard these giant cargo carriers. This book contains a lively account of German missionary Karl Gützlaff's voyage from Siam to China on a white-head junk in 1831 and his rather uncomfortable, if not hilarious, experience with its Teochew crew and passengers.
